About Marc

Walk a Mile in My Town. You’ll be Glad You Did.

Marc and Ozgur

I met a new friend today. Well, that is not entirely accurate. Özgür and I have spoken quite a few times before, but only a brief “hello”, “how much”, “goodbye”, “see you later”; He in broken English, me in even worse Turkish. Özgür works at a refreshment stand at one of the parks between my [...]

Making Friends Fast in Turkey

Ilknur Oznur and Ann

We’ve been in Turkey for going on a month. I guess you could say we are Turks now. Oh wait, Turks can say more than good morning, hello, good bye, and a few other niceties in Turkish. I’m not a Turk yet, but I’m working on the language. What Turks and Americans understand alike is [...]

Welcome

Muslim man, Karen Village Longneck, Indian Prostitute, Karen Villager, Indian Boy, Celebrating Holi

Since 1999 we have been living in and traveling throughout Asia. Our travels have taken us to India and Thailand many times as well as Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bhutan, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and even across Antarctica to Argentina.

Kathmandu, Nepal (Again)

Hindu Holy Men

On the way to the hotel we stopped off at a large Hindu temple and the Buddha Stuppa, a Buddhist temple that looks like a round circus tent made of concrete.  At the Hindu temple there were several men who looked like evil clowns.  They had painted their bodies white and then painted designs all [...]

Pokhara, Nepal

Pokhara Lake in Nepal

14 November From the Pokhara airport we caught a taxi to Lakeside and found a restaurant to park ourselves in as we waited.  We ate lunch and talked about everything we could think of.  Directly across the street from the restaurant was a huge lake.  Canoes and paddleboats lined the shores and a few people [...]

Kathmandu, Nepal

Arriving in Kathmandu, Nepal

We arrived in Kathmandu yesterday afternoon. We were greeted with open arms and silk scarves by the hosts. Richard helped produce a movie here in Nepal and the director and some of the others involved in the film met us. It was a tremendous welcome and we felt at home. Jonanda (spelled wrong I am sure) is a Nepali legend. At one time he was a popular singer and is now involved in the film industry. He took us directly to the meager production offices for introductions to all the staff.

Benaris or Varanasi, India

Our friends Richard and Gina

Our friends Richard and Gina arrived in Calcutta right on time from Delhi this morning. We took them to the house to rest for a few minutes and to meet Steve. After a couple of hours we took off for downtown for a little site seeing and to get a ticket for Ann and I to fly to Nepal with them. They had asked us that morning if we would join them, and we gratefully accepted.

Jaldapara to Bhutan to Baghdogra

Day Six Thursday, 2 November Morning came much too early.  It was cold outside and since I left the windows open all night it was freezing inside as well.  I didn’t want to get up, but we had to meet Roger and Hans at 5:30 for the elephant ride.  The workers at the lodge had [...]

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary

Still Day Five We arrived at the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary late in the afternoon.  Roger paid for our rooms at the gate and we drove the 4 or 5 kilometers into the preserve to the lodge.  We saw a few animals along the road, but I commented to Ann that we had seen more animals [...]

Lava, India

Still Day Five Lava is a small village nestled in the hills.  Sitting on the side of the mountain is a restaurant in which a family lives and works.  The place reminds me of a country store in America.  Good people and good food at a good price.  The buses stop just outside, carrying people [...]

Kalimpang to Lava, India

Day Five Wednesday, 1 November The clothes that I put on the line to dry were wetter than when I left them last night.  Contrary to what the hotel owner said, the cold, wet, night air was not suitable for drying clothes outside.  After packing the bike I just stacked the wet clothes on the [...]

Kalimpang, India

Still Day Four Kalimpang is situated on the backside of the mountain from Darjeeling.  The guide books will tell you that Scottish missionaries frequented this place in the later part of the 19th century for it’s beauty and resources.  What resources they are talking about I don’t know.  We stayed at the almost new “Cloud [...]

Teesta River Rafting

Rafting the Teesta River

Frack was afraid of the water because she could not swim, but Frick was pressuring her to go. They went away to fight it out and in the end she joined us. We all reassured her that she would be ok and I think her fears were abated just a little. Gunnell had decided to stay with our belongings back at the office.

Tiger Hill

Sunrise at Tiger Hill, Himalayas

At 3:15 am the phone rang. The wake up call was a little earlier than I desired, but it was needed. By four we were on our way to Tiger Hill. Tiger Hill is a viewpoint 11 kilometers from town where the British built a four-story building for the purpose of watching the sunrise over the Himalayas. Frick and Frack elected to stay in bed and miss one of the highlights of the trip. It is amazing how lust will cloud one’s judgment.

Islampur to Darjeeling

Taxi Driver in Mirik

At 5 am the Hare Krishna devotees were back at it. They were singing, chanting, whooping, banging cymbals, and playing various instruments before the idols that they worship. It was just past daybreak and the sun was about to peek over the palm trees lined up behind the temple. I was convicted by their devotion.

Day Two

Day Two Sunday, 29 October Departure time was 7 am, but Frick and Frack (as I began to call “Germany and Nepal”) didn’t show up for breakfast until ten minutes before.  We had not seen them since the day before when we had arrived at the hotel.  They had skipped lunch and went straight to [...]

Calcutta to Baharampur

Hans

Day One Saturday, 28 October Saturday morning came early.  We arrived at Roger and Gunnell’s house at 6:40 ready to go.  The Hero Honda CBZ was packed and ready to go.  We had bungeed one backpack to the “windshield” and a side-bag full of clothes and other stuff to the side.  Once again Ann was [...]

Himalayan Bike Trip: Calcutta to Bhutan and Back

4 November 2000 It is Saturday afternoon, a couple of hours after returning from our trip to the mountains.  We left Baharampur this morning at 5:30 sharp and arrived home around 11:00.  The whole experience was good.  I am going to settle in and try to get a few things done before resting a little.  [...]

Nehemiah Institute: Patna, Bihar, India

8 October 2000 Bruce, Ann, and I arrived in Patna this evening three hours later than originally scheduled.  Our Sahara Air flight was delayed out of Calcutta due to Delhi’s airport being closed this morning for some reason or the other.  The whole country was held hostage by their late flights. Nevertheless, three wonderful gentlemen [...]

Another Amazing Thing

Front Yard in Calcutta

[Written 27 June 2000] The Sports Authority of India is where my friends and I play basketball occasionally.  It is a huge complex not too far from our home that houses an outdoor soccer stadium, running tracks, two indoor gyms, basketball & tennis courts, etc, etc. Men, women, boys and girls of all ages can [...]

The Phone and Thankfulness

[Written June 2000] We got a telephone Friday.  Well, we got a line and a handset.  It will take another week to get a dial tone and a number.  This is not bad considering that our landlord put the order in for the phone two and a half months ago.  They said it would take [...]

Locked Up on Election Day

[Written 25 June 2000] It is 10 o’clock Sunday morning in Calcutta.  The normal routine is to be out the door by 8:30 and on our way to the worship service at church.  About this time we would be mingling with the locals and a few foreigners talking after the service.  Hot cups of tea [...]

A Visit with a Newly Found Friend

[Written June 2000] Yesterday Ann and I drove to the home of Gopalan (not his real name) for a visit.  We had met Gopalan at the Chinese restaurant in Calcutta where he works as the Waiter Captain, or Maitre D.  He was excited to have Americans in his home, especially for a Bengali meal.  We [...]

A Few Thoughts About Being an American in a Foreign Land

[Written 14 June 2000] America.  Everyone has an opinion about what it means to be an American, even people who are not.  Americans can dispense endless flag-waving facts about our country at the drop of a hat.  Americans are proud people.  We are leaders in the world.  There is not a country on earth that [...]

Anniversary Thoughts

[Written 8 June 2000] Tuesday was Ann’s and my second anniversary.  My how time flies.  I don’t think either one of us would have guessed two and a half years ago that we would be married, much less having a wedding anniversary in India. We got to know each other on a trip to Prague, [...]

The Theft

[Written 4 June 2000] Today began like any other Sunday. Ann woke up first and like the Marines accomplished more before 9 am than most people do all day. I can’t say that she got up before the sun because daybreak in Calcutta is 4:42. She shook me at 7:30 and called out a reminder [...]

Language Lessons

[Written 1 June 2000] I have been battling a head and chest cold for three days now. I think the worst is over, yet I still have the heaviness in my chest that comes with congestion along with a nagging cough. I am tired, hot, sweaty, and in need of a week on a beach [...]

Traffic

[Written June 2000] [NOTE: This section contains details that may be too much for the faint of heart)] Bangalore traffic is bad. There are more motorcycles on the road than cars. Trucks and buses rule the road with an iron bumper and no regard for life. We were introduced to the rules of the road [...]

The Hospital

[Written 30 May 2000] It is 4 a.m. and I can’t sleep. I have been up since 2:30 with a sinus headache which left me about thirty minutes ago. I am up now and have a lot on my mind. It seems like a good time to write. Before I got up and turned on [...]

Electricians, Showers, and other Oddities of Life

Things don’t happen here the way they do in other countries.  I guess I’m really talking about the US when I say that. People seldom do what we think they will. Sometimes it is a pleasant surprise, sometimes it angers. Often times I just shake my head and smile. The mindset is different. I don’t [...]
