Day Six Thursday, 2 November Morning came much too early. It was cold outside and since I left the windows open all night it was freezing inside as well. I didn’t want to get up, but we had to meet Roger and Hans at 5:30 for the elephant ride. The workers at the lodge had [...]
Jaldapara to Bhutan to Baghdogra
Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary
Still Day Five We arrived at the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary late in the afternoon. Roger paid for our rooms at the gate and we drove the 4 or 5 kilometers into the preserve to the lodge. We saw a few animals along the road, but I commented to Ann that we had seen more animals [...]
Lava, India
Still Day Five Lava is a small village nestled in the hills. Sitting on the side of the mountain is a restaurant in which a family lives and works. The place reminds me of a country store in America. Good people and good food at a good price. The buses stop just outside, carrying people [...]
Kalimpang to Lava, India
Day Five Wednesday, 1 November The clothes that I put on the line to dry were wetter than when I left them last night. Contrary to what the hotel owner said, the cold, wet, night air was not suitable for drying clothes outside. After packing the bike I just stacked the wet clothes on the [...]
Kalimpang, India
Still Day Four Kalimpang is situated on the backside of the mountain from Darjeeling. The guide books will tell you that Scottish missionaries frequented this place in the later part of the 19th century for it’s beauty and resources. What resources they are talking about I don’t know. We stayed at the almost new “Cloud [...]
Teesta River Rafting

Frack was afraid of the water because she could not swim, but Frick was pressuring her to go. They went away to fight it out and in the end she joined us. We all reassured her that she would be ok and I think her fears were abated just a little. Gunnell had decided to stay with our belongings back at the office.
Tiger Hill

At 3:15 am the phone rang. The wake up call was a little earlier than I desired, but it was needed. By four we were on our way to Tiger Hill. Tiger Hill is a viewpoint 11 kilometers from town where the British built a four-story building for the purpose of watching the sunrise over the Himalayas. Frick and Frack elected to stay in bed and miss one of the highlights of the trip. It is amazing how lust will cloud one’s judgment.
Islampur to Darjeeling

At 5 am the Hare Krishna devotees were back at it. They were singing, chanting, whooping, banging cymbals, and playing various instruments before the idols that they worship. It was just past daybreak and the sun was about to peek over the palm trees lined up behind the temple. I was convicted by their devotion.
Day Two
Day Two Sunday, 29 October Departure time was 7 am, but Frick and Frack (as I began to call “Germany and Nepal”) didn’t show up for breakfast until ten minutes before. We had not seen them since the day before when we had arrived at the hotel. They had skipped lunch and went straight to [...]
Calcutta to Baharampur

Day One Saturday, 28 October Saturday morning came early. We arrived at Roger and Gunnell’s house at 6:40 ready to go. The Hero Honda CBZ was packed and ready to go. We had bungeed one backpack to the “windshield” and a side-bag full of clothes and other stuff to the side. Once again Ann was [...]
Himalayan Bike Trip: Calcutta to Bhutan and Back
4 November 2000 It is Saturday afternoon, a couple of hours after returning from our trip to the mountains. We left Baharampur this morning at 5:30 sharp and arrived home around 11:00. The whole experience was good. I am going to settle in and try to get a few things done before resting a little. [...]
